--------------------------------------------------------- Mini-GEM Workshop Report, December 4, 1994, San Francisco --------------------------------------------------------- MAGNETOTAIL/SUBSTORM CAMPAIGN WG1: SUBSTORM ONSET SIGNATURES: IDENTIFICATION, LOCATION, AND TIMING Working Group 1 met in San Francisco on the Sunday prior to AGU to discuss data sets relative to the timing of events seen on the ground and at satellites that may be related to substorm growth, onset and expansion. At Snowmass last June three sets of events were identified for coordinated data collection and study. Data was gathered and sent to the coordinators as the beginning of collaborations. A series of substorms in March 1993 was coordinated by Lyons. The January 11-14, 1994, period was coordinated by Maynard. Hughes coordinated several events with CRRES data from 1991. Each of the coordinators developed time lines for each event. These are available by request to the appropriate coordinator. At the mini-workshop the time lines were presented for each substorm period along with selected data to illustrate selected events. A large amount of data has been supplied, some of which are available through Mosaic home pages. We are extremely pleased with the cooperation of all who have sent data. We would like to reiterate, as we proceed to the analysis phase, that the studies need to remain coordinated. Rules of the road should be the same as those on a number of recent satellite programs: If you use someone's data, offer that person a chance to be part of the study, to have the option of participating as a co-author or to add any necessary and pertinent caveats. Keep the data suppliers and coordinators informed as to who is pursuing what topics and events. Brief comments on each campaign follow based on the discussions at San Francisco. Jan. 1994: A number of interesting events were identified. Unfortunately solar wind data is minimal. This period provided an excellent opportunity of correlating ground based signatures with GEOTAIL data at 90 Re. On 11 Jan GEOTAIL was in and out of the magnetosheath. 13 Jan events had features in the distant tail that were tentatively identified as plasmoids; however, further study is needed. 14 Jan events found the distant tail flow and the vertical component of B at GEOTAIL changing as activity changed. 12 January was unique in that an injection event was seen on the morning side at geosynchronous well before any significant signature was seen in the ground data. Interest at the workshop was concentrated on the 13 and 14 Jan= events. Events as previously identified, including earliest detected onsets in parentheses, are as follows: 11 Jan 1994 0636UT (0628) 0530-0730 12 Jan 1994 0450 (0430?) 0350-0550 13 Jan 1994 0100 (0047.5) 0000-0200 13 Jan 1994 0315 (0314) 0215-0415 14 Jan 1994 0630 (0629) 0530-0730 additional active intervals of possible interest: 14 Jan 1994 20-24 (2235) 20-22; 22-24 14 Jan 1994 1730-1830 (1925) 16-18; 18-20 Data contributors to the workshop for the January period are as follows: Vassilis Angelopoulos APL Geotail Energetic Particles Rick Doe SRI Sondrestrom Radar and Optical Eigil Friis-Christensen DMI Greenland Mag Data Jeff Hughes BU MACCS Mag Data Bjorn Jacobsen Oslo Svalbard Optical Data Hermann L=FChr Braunschweig IMAGE Mag Data Masato Nakamura Tokyo Geotail Mag and Plasma Data Geoff Reeves LANL Geosync Particle Data Fred Rich Phillips DMSP Particles and Drifts John Samson Alberta CANOPUS Mag and Optical (Gordon Rostoker) Howard Singer SEL GOES Mag and Intermagnet (Don Herzog) The LANL and APL data are available via Mosaic. Further interpretation of these events will be made at Snowmass next June (Maynard). March 17-25, 1993 Events A wide variety of events have been catalogued with good ground magnetometer, radar, optical, and geosync satellite data. GEOTAIL data is available from near 200 Re.
