GEM Mini Workshop Report - San Francisco - December 10, 1995 Tail Substorm Campaign - Working Group 1. Brief progress reports were given on the CRRES events (Jeff Hughes), the March 1995 event (Alan Rodger), and the January 11-14, 1994 period (Masato Nakamura). It was noted that three papers were to be presented on the January 1994 period and one on the March 1995 event at the AGU meeting. The September 16 and 17, 1995 period was introduced. This was one of the WIND perigee events planned at the Snowmass meeting. A large amount of data has been assembled in a short time. We thank all those who responded. This includes data from WIND, GEOTAIL, INTERBALL, LANL Geosync, DMSP, Sondestrom, 3 Scandanavian magnetometers, and SUPER DARN. Data from Halley Bay, and the Greenland magnetometer chain are also expected. The focus was on the event near 2320 UT on the 16th. A previous event is also seen just after 1900 hrs which is outside the radar coverage, but may prove interesting in other ground and satellite data. Not enough data for the 0930 event of the 17th was submitted to pursue the event at this time . WIND observed the event in the near tail at X = -13 Re and Y = 8 Re. Jim Slavin of the WIND team has agreed to lead the investigation of the two events at the end of September 16th. Please send any additional interpreted data to Nelson Maynard or Jim by the 2nd of January. Please plot on two hour intervals as before but include 18-20, 20-22, 22-00, and 00-02 (17th) UT. Send data to: Nelson Maynard Jim Slavin Mission Research Corp Code 696 One Tara Blvd; Ste. 302 Goddard Space Flight Center Nashua, NH 03062 Greenbelt, MD 20771 maynard@zircon.plh.af.mil slavin@lepjas.gsfc.nasa.gov Two upcoming WIND perigee events will occur on 21-22 December and 13 January. The first one has WIND crossing the midnight meridion near field lines that map to Scandanavia and the second over CANOPUS and western Canada. Please support these with as much coverage as possible. If interesting events occur we will pursue them this winter. Nelson Maynard Larry Lyons
