						     Volume 1, Number 3
						     December 23, 1991

A very successful workshop was held at the San Francisco AGU meeting
on Sunday, December 8. About 50 scientists attended the 2 parallel
sessions. Reports from the coordinators will be distributed in the
near future.

Those interested in obtaining support for GEM related activities are
reminded that February 1 is NFS's target date for proposals for such
research. For further information please contact program director Tim
Eastman. Also feel free to contact Bill Lotko, the chairman of the GEM
steering committee or any of the GEM coordinators. More details about
the GEM program can be obtained from an upcoming EOS article on the GEM
program by Paul Dusenbery and George Siscoe.

On behalf of Tim Eastman, the GEM program director, Bill Lotko and
the GEM steering committee, and all the GEM coordinators we wish you a
Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays and a very successful and rewarding New
Year.
