*************************** ** THE GEM MESSENGER ** *************************** Volume 3, Number 14 September 29, 1993 ------------------------------------------- ANNOUNCEMENT -- MEETING OF WORKING GROUP 5 ------------------------------------------- There will be a meeting of Working Group 5 at Phillips Laboratory, Hanscom Air force Base, Massachusetts, on October 26 and 27. The purpose of the meeting is to define and begin to implement a plan to bring work-station level components of a GGCM and other GEM related products to the geospace community over the next two or three years. It is expected that the plan will be in part an extension of the work described in the WG 5 Report from the 1993 Snowmass Meeting, but with additions for greater inclusiveness and comprehensiveness. The plan will take cognizance of related efforts in other projects--ISTP, STEP, DEDAR, Air Force--to coordinate the division of tasks and to optimize the use of resources available to the community. The Snowmass Workshop and the earlier AGU meeting of WG 5 revealed that several codes were at a stage where community-usable versions could be developed within the stated time. A non-exhaustive list of these includes the Spreiter-Stahara gas-dynamic magnetosheath code, the Rice Magnetospheric Specification Model (MSM), the Toffoletto-Hill electric field mapping algorithm, and the HAO Assimilative Mapping of Ionospheric Electrodynamics (AMIE). One goal of the Phillips Lab meeting is to assess the state of readiness of these and other codes, determine what still needs to be done, and establish an agenda for completion. A second and more GEM-specific goal of the meeting is to define how to interface the codes to enable users to combine them mix-and-match fashion. A similar assessment of interface codes will be undertaken and an agenda established for developing them. The meeting will be held in the Narcisi Room, located in Building 1106 (the isolated building at the center of the Phillips Lab complex). The meeting will begin at 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday, 26 October, and adjourn at 3:00 p.m. the following day. The meeting is open and anyone interested is invited to attend. Non-US citizens will require clearance to attend; please inform Mike Heinemann if you require clearance. A map and hotel information package will be sent to anyone requesting it.
