Note from the NSF Program Director
----------------------------------

   As of mid-January, Odile de la Beaujardiere will be the new Program 
Director for Magnetospheric Physics.  I have great confidence in Odile 
and am sure that this appointment will be beneficial to the GEM program.  
Please give your best support to Odile as she works to advance space 
plasma physics at NSF.  I will be returning to the University  of 
Maryland as a research faculty member in the Institute for Physical Science

  We are located only one block from the ONR offices in Ballston, Va, 
1/2 block south of the Ballston metro stop.  Calls to the old phone number

  The recent WG 5 meeting in Boston was a great success and I'm sure that 
the upcoming GEM workshop on Dec. 5 preceeding the fall AGU meeting will 
be very productive.  For FY94, we have received 19 GEM proposals with a 
first year request of approx. $1.5M.  Available funds are approx. 1/5 to 
1/4 of request level depending on final MAG budget for FY94 which should 
be known within about one month.  Proposals will be sent out for review 
next week and, tentatively, a small panel will be convened in early Feb. 
to select new GEM grantees.  With the move of NSF, transition in Program 
Directors, and other factors, it is difficult to complete this process 
more quickly.
