*************************** ** THE GEM MESSENGER ** *************************** Volume 5, Number 27 October 20, 1995 ----------------------------------------------------- Change of NSF Magnetospheric Physics Program Director ----------------------------------------------------- From: Odile de La Beaujardiere (odelabe at nsf.gov) After almost 2 years in the Magnetospheric Physics Program of the National Science Foundation, I have now moved to the Office of Polar Programs, still within NSF. Dr. Bob Robinson, Program Director for the Upper Atmospheric Facilities, is presently acting Program Director in the Magnetospheric Physics. Most of you know him, and can appreciate how capable he is. We are working together to ensure a smooth transition. He should be contacted if you have any question. His number is (703) 306-1531, email is: rmrobins at nsf.gov. The person who will eventually replace me has not yet been selected. (Watch for the EOS job announcement.) I am sure he/she will be exceptional and will be effective in safeguarding the interests of the magnetospheric community. In spite of the usual stresses--not enough grant money, not enough time-- I thoroughly enjoyed my work within the Upper Atmospheric Research Section. I appreciated greatly all my colleagues at the Division of Atmospheric Sciences, and it has been a real pleasure to serve the Magnetospheric community, a community of outstanding individuals: creative, innovative, energetic and a lot of fun. I am impressed by the advances made recently in all areas of GEM-- boundary layer, Tail and Substorm, large-scale models--as well as in the space sciences in general. This coming year should be very good for the Magnetospheric Physics Program. The budget is expected to be about the same as last year, but we hope to see new money for Space Weather related proposals. Furthermore, the new fiscal year starts "clean", unburdened by leftover FY 95 proposals. I am excited by the new scientific challenges that will come about from the collaborative investigations with the ISTP program, and the concerted, multifaceted space weather effort. As with the previous one, my new position of Program Director for the Arctic Natural Sciences Program is a temporary one. This new program is designed to support research in the Arctic and to perform arctic research at US institutions. It encompasses several disciplines: magnetospheric physics, as well as atmospheric sciences, biological sciences, earth sciences, glaciology and oceanography. I will therefore continue my interest in Space Sciences, but my responsibilities involve a much greater scope of disciplines. (If you are interested, please consult the new NSF "Arctic Research Program" announcement, document number NSF 95-133.) I am extremely grateful for your support during my time in the Magnetospheric Physics Program, and hope to stay in contact with all of you.
