*************************** ** THE GEM MESSENGER ** *************************** Volume 5, Number 36 November 15, 1995 -------------------------------------------- 1. UPDATE ON THE INTERNATIONAL AURORAL STUDY -------------------------------------------- From: Cindy Cattell (cattell at belka.spa.umn.edu) As I am sure you are all aware, the launch of the FAST satellite was delayed again this summer by the failure of the Pegasus XL launch. Another XL launch is scheduled for January, 1996. If this launch is successful, FAST will probably be launched in August, 1996 by an XL. Other launch options are also currently being explored. Due to this delay in the launch of FAST, as well as delays in the launches of Polar and MSX, the initial IAS campaign period has been changed to approximately December, 1996 through February, 1997. This delay has several advantages. The Polar spacecraft will be fully checked out and the extensive array of ground based instruments associated with Polar and Cluster will be operational and available. In addition, there are several auroral rocket flights scheduled and we anticipate that FAST and Interball-Aurora will be operational. There will be no further delays in the first IAS campaign! We plan to have a campaign next winter even if there are further delays in satellite launches. An IAS Homepage is under development. We will send another message with the address when it is available. For further information, contact C. Cattell (612-626-8918; cattell at belka.spa.umn.edu). ----------------------------------------------------------------------- 2.
