Interplanetary Aspects of Space Weather
---------------------------------------
From: Vic Pizzo (vpizzo at vulcan.sel.noaa.gov)

Dear Colleague,

The GEM and CEDAR communities have set aside the afternoon of Sunday,
December 10 (arrival day for the 1995 Fall AGU), for a series of
mini-workshops at the Moscone Center in San Francisco. It is therefore
timely to convene interested members of the solar/interplanetary
community to discuss informally what steps should be taken
to develop our own coherent strategies and goals with respect to
the space weather initiative. We invite all individuals with an interest
in the subject to gather from 2:30-4:15pm in the Moscone Center in Room 262,
which is adjacent to the GEM/CEDAR proceedings. The joint GEM/CEDAR
storm session will follow immediately after (at 4:30pm) in Room 256.

The interplanetary aspects meeting will address a number of topics,
including assessment of where we stand with regard to modeling background
and transient flows between the Sun and Earth, observational needs,
key topics for basic research in the next few years, and prospects for
improving forecasts of interplanetary disturbances affecting the near-Earth
environment. In addition, we would like to discuss the location, timing, and
agenda for an interplanetary aspects meeting to be held next summer in
conjunction with the GEM/CEDAR meetings.

Finally, you are reminded of the space weather panel discussion to be held
on Monday, December 11, from 4:45-6:30 in Room 305 in the Moscone Center.
The panel, which will include representatives from DoD, NASA, NOAA, and NSF,
is being convened to discuss with the community the most important aspects
of the National Space Weather Program Implementation Plan and the
modalities for the proposed multi-agency Space Weather opportunity.

See you in San Francisco,

V. J. Pizzo, for the interplanetary space weather steering committee
