Update on the Plans for the Saturday Extension of the GEM/SEC Workshop
----------------------------------------------------------------------
From: George Siscoe (SISCOE at buasta.bu.edu)

This is an update on the plans for the Saturday extension of
the GEM/SEC workshop. First let me apologize for the suddenness
and lateness of this addition to the real business of the workshop.
An explanation is in order. Less than three weeks ago, at the GEM
Steering Committee meeting held in conjunction with the AGU meeting,
the leaders of the Boundary Layer Campaign challenged the GGCM
Campaign to simulate synoptic maps at the ionospheric level that
they had constructed. (The maps show potential patterns, boundary
layer positions, and separatrix positions for times in January 1992
when the IMF was stable.) This challenge represents the way GEM is
supposed to work: each campaign challenging the others as a way to
move forward together toward the ultimate GEM goal of developing a
community GGCM. But the response time to a challenge is inherently
long since six months separates workshops. To save six months, we
decided to start planning the response to the challenge in
conjunction with the January GEM/SEC workshop. The lateness of
this decision will result in some people who, given earlier notice,
would have attended but will now miss the Saturday meeting. This
consequence seemed the lesser evil since Saturday attendance is no
prerequisite for participating in the project.

Regarding the response to the Boundary Layer challenge, the plan now
is as follows. So that all interested in the challenge can learn of
it and still leave before Saturday, we will discuss it immediately
after the regular meeting adjourns at 5:30 on Thursday. What the
challenge is exactly and how we might respond to it will be
discussion topics. This should take about an hour. The Saturday
meeting (which will probably end around noon) will then build on this
discussion with the intent of identifying action items that can lead
to results to present at the Snowmass workshop. The presentations at
Snowmass will occur during a joint half-day session cosponsored by
the Boundary Layer and GGCM Campaigns. To keep everyone apprised of
plans and to solicit feedback and participation, the proceedings of
the Thursday and Saturday discussions will be reported in a GEM
Newsletter.

It would help with logistics if everyone who plans to attend the
Saturday meeting please let Howard Singer know (hsinger at noaa.sel.gov).
