ROBERT CLAUER'S APPOINTMENT AT NSF

I am pleased to announce the addition of Dr. Robert Clauer to our 
NSF team.  Dr.  Clauer will take over as the Program Director for 
Magnetospheric Physics, a position that has been vacant since last 
September when Dr. Odile de la Beaujardiere left to join NSF's 
Office of Polar Programs.  Bob will now begin the first year of what
we anticipate to be a two year term.  His appointment is immediate 
-- beginning March 25, 1996.  Dr. de la Beaujardiere did a splendid 
job at NSF in guiding the Magnetospheric Program.  We all deeply 
appreciate her work and wish Odile the best in her new assignment

As many of you know, Dr. Clauer comes to us from the University of 
Michigan where he has been an active member and leader of the 
magnetospheric physics community.  NSF strongly depends on its 
ability to attract first-rate scientists to manage research programs.
In selecting Bob, we clearly continue this tradition.  I should add
that the choice this time was extremely difficult, since a number of
unusually well-qualified scientists applied.    

So, welcome aboard, Bob. With the successes of NASA's ISTP program,
our GEM program and the start of the interagency National Space 
Weather Program, the next few years should be particularly productive
and exciting.
