INPUT DATA FOR COMPARISON OF OBSERVED AND SIMULATED POLAR CAP 
CONVECTION PATTERNS

The GEM steering committee has recommended that Working Groups 1 and 5 
perform a comparison of model predictions with observations during selected 
GEM intervals.  The first interval chosen for this comparison is January 
27-30, 1992.  Initial results will be presented at a half day session at the 
Snowmass 1996 meeting. A draft manuscript discussing events during this 
interval prepared by Larry Lyons and co-workers is available.  The 
manuscript includes a number of figures showing the results of AIME analysis 
of ionospheric electrodynamics and simultaneou separatrix and boundary layer 
identification.  Solar wind plasma and magnetic field data, and the AL and 
Dst indices have been placed in a set of ascii flat files to be used in 
driving models or simulations, or for comparison with their output.

Original data provided by the IMP-8 investigators were sent to Gang Lu at 
the High Altitude Observatory.  These files were forwarded to Robert 
Mcpherron at UCLA for editing and plotting.  The solar wind data have been 
edited and interpolated to one minute resolution and then merged into a 
single file. The indices are those obtained from the AIME analysis at 
5-minute resolution. Plots hae been stored in GIF format.

The complete set of files for this project are presently available at an 
anonymous ftp site at UCLA.  The files are described in an ascii file named 
"contents.m".  Please view this file to note which files should be 
transferred in ascii format and which in binary format.  The site is as follows:
