NSF GEM '96 Summer Workshop Agenda
----------------------------------
From: spence at bu.edu (Harlan E. Spence)

Dear GEM Community,

Please find attached the final agenda (as of 5/9/96!) for the
upcoming NSF/GEM summer workshop, to be held on 23 - 28 June 1996 in
Snowmass, CO. This year's workshop promises to be the most diverse
workshop to date, with many different projects in full swing. In a
nutshell:

o The first GEM initiative, the Boundary Layer (BL) Campaign, is now
mature. The BL campaign will be providing results to the Global
Geospace Convection Model (GGCM) Campaign in a first attempt to
synthesize science results formally into the GGCM framework. Both the
BL and GGCM campaigns will meet separately on Monday and Tuesay as
well
        as meeting jointly on Tuesday.

o A new campaign definition will commence on Wednesday as GEM initiates
the Inner Magnetosphere and Storm Campaign.

o On Thursday and Friday, the "adolescent" Magnetotail and Substorm
Campaign will continue the exciting projects started at the last few
        workshops.

This year is especially stimulating owing to the near-complete
deployment of the ISTP suite of spacecraft. Many of the sessions will
incorporate these new data sets implicitly and they should provide a great
boost to the on-going and formative GEM campaigns. Several tutorials are
geared to provide a view of the spacecraft data now available via the ISTP
program and lessons already learned from analysis of these data.

The agenda shown below represents a fairly accurate representation of
the meeting format. As most of you know, GEM meetings are workshops and
this tends to produce a certain amount of fluidity in schedule. Don't be
surprised if the final agenda changes a little from the present plan, but
don't expect any GREAT changes. Please stay tuned for detailed "calls for
participation" from the various campaign working groups (many have already
posted such requests and are available at the GEM WWW homepage). As the
working group programs crystallize, the chairs will post their own more
definitive programs which will dovetail with the general outline below.
Please contact the working group chairs directly for the more specific
information.

I look forward to seeing you all at Snowmass. This year promises to be
a real winner!

Best regards, --- Harlan E. Spence
