*************************** ** THE GEM MESSENGER ** *************************** Volume 6, Number 30 June 11, 1996 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- PROGRAM FOR JOINT WG-1/GGCM MODEL-DATA COMPARISON SESSION ON TUESDAY, JUNE 25 Updated ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: "Larry Lyons" The GEM steering committee recommended that Working Groups 1 and 5 (GGCM) coordinate model-data comparison studies for GEM periods. Plans for first comparisons for stable IMF intervals, Jan. 27-28, 1992 were formulated in Boulder on the Saturday after the January meeting of WG-5. INTERVALS in order of priority: 1. ---- 28 Jan., 01:15 UT +/- 170 min: B ~ (7,-13,-7) nT (large By, negative Bz) 2. ---- 27 Jan., 15:20 UT +/- 115 min: B ~ (5,-20,5) nT (large By, positive Bz) 3. ---- 28 Jan., 19:05 UT +/- 45 min: B ~ (9,-2,4) nT (small By, positive Bz) 4. ---- 27 Jan., 18:30 UT +/- 60 min: B ~ (5,-18,-3) nT (large By, negative Bz) HAVE AVAILABLE (and put on GEM homepage by Bob McPherron): 1. "Synoptic space weather maps", including AMIE potentials, and separatrix and polar-cap boundary layer identifications 2. AMIE ionospheric and field-aligned currents 3. Standardized IMF & solar wind data WILL COMPARE: 1. Potential patterns 2. Separatrix location versus MLT 3. Boundary layers within polar cap, including mantle, inner edge of cusp ion dispersion, and "soft-electron zone" (SEZ) 4. Field-aligned and ionospheric currents 5. Auroral indices PROGRAM 8:00-8:05: Setting the Scene (Chair: George Siscoe) 8:05-8:25: Observations Framework (L. Lyons) 8:25-8:30: Input Data (R. McPherron) 08:30-10:00: Presentation from the following modeling groups 1. Magnetosheath velocities, densities, and temperatures (Stahara, Spreiter) 2. Construction of the AL, AU, and Dst indices from IMP-8 solar wind/IMF, and the Polar Cap index. (Vassiliadis) 3. New model of polar cap electric potentials that can produce a pattern for any arbitrary IMF (Weimer) 4. IZMIRAN Electrodynamic Model (IZMEM) potentials (available at http://www.sprl.umich.edu/MIST) and AE index using only IMF input (Papitashvili) 5. Calculation of particle distributions for comparison with DMSP, using Toffoletto-Hill model outputs (Onsager) 6. Global model results (Winglee) 10:00-10:20: Break 10:20-11:40 Presentation from the following modeling groups 7. Potentials and separatrix in Toffoletto-Hill model using Stahara-Spreiter magnetosheath velocities (Toffoletto) 8. Schulz source-surface model separatrix, potentials, and boundary layers (Peroomian) 9. NRL MHD (Lyon) 10.
