*************************** ** THE GEM MESSENGER ** *************************** Volume 6, Number 56 November 6, 1996 ------------------------------------------------------------------ CALL FOR PAPERS - IAGA SESSION 3.01/2.07/4.11: PLASMA PROCESSES AT THE EARTH'S MAGNETOPAUSE AND THEIR IONOSPHERIC EFFECTS ------------------------------------------------------------------ from: Mike Lockwood < m.lockwood at rl.ac.uk > 8th Scientific Assembly of IAGA, Uppasla Session 3.01/2.07/4.11 Plasma Processes At The Earth's Magnetopause And Their Ionospheric Effects AM & PM Friday, 8th, and Saturday, 9th, August 1997 The magnetopause is central to studies of solar-terrestrial physics because the transfer of momentum, mass and energy from the shocked solar wind to the coupled magnetosphere-ionosphere- thermosphere system is not yet fully understood. It is also interesting as a boundary across which most plasma and field parameters usually show at least some shear. It is a central objective of a large number of recent and future satellite missions and its projection along geomagnetic field lines, the cusp/LLBL ionosphere, is within the field of view of new ground-based facilities. Combined with modelling and theoretical studies, these new observations promise to reveal much about how the magnetopause boundary behaves. We therefore invite contributed talks on satellite and ground-based observations of the magnetopause, cusp and LLBL regions, as well as relevant theoretical and simulation studies of processes, structure and effects. Contributed papers will be of 15 minutes duration, including discussion. A major poster session is planned in addition. Contributors are invited to send an abstract to the convenors of the session before the IAGA official abstract deadline (February 15, 1997). Rules for abstract submission can be accessed via the WWW ( http://www.irfu.se/iaga_97.html ) or requested from the convenors: Mike Lockwood Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, Chilton, Didcot, Oxfordshire, OX11 0QX, England, U.K. phone: +44-235-446496; fax: +44-235-445848; e-mail: m.lockwood at rl.ac.uk David G.
