A draft agenda, with some description of the workshop sessions, is appended below. The first announcement describing the workshop was in the GEM Messenger (10/4/96 Vol 6, No 47), the SPA newsletter (10/7/96 vol III, issue 73), Solar News (10/11/96) and a CEDAR newsletter. ********IMPORTANT*********** ADDITIONAL INFORMATION (ON-LINE REGISTRATION, HOUSING, POSTERS AND VIDEO PRESENTATIONS) CAN BE FOUND AT A LINK ON THE SEC HOME PAGE: http://www.sec.noaa.gov or go directly go to http://sec.noaa.gov/~swc/swc.cgi NOTE THAT YOU MAY HAVE TO REFRESH OR RELOAD YOUR LINK TO BRING UP THE MOST RECENT VERSION AND THAT www IS NOT IN THE SECOND ADDRESS ABOVE. *************************** If you are unable to access this site, please contact: Howard Singer at: phone 303-497-6959; fax 303-497-3645; or hsinger at sec.noaa.gov. The rest of the time will be for entertaining questions from the audience. Thu 10:00 Views of Customer Needs This session is intended to identify the specific needs of the various users of space weather services. This will include: 1) forecasters who are the interface between those who provide models and data and those who use their forecasts; 2) third party vendors who add value to the products provided by space weather services; and 3) end users who make decisions based on the space weather information provided. Thu 11:45-2:00 Posters and Videos Posters: Poster presenters will include but not be limited to the recent recipients of the NSF/DoD National Space Weather Program funding. Posters of models as well as new or improved data streams that will support space weather activities are welcome. Guidelines for model posters are: posters should provide an overview of the model; model input; model output; issues related to making it available for space weather operations; and how the model may support customer needs currently, in the near term, and in the far term. For data posters, the posters should include a description of the data set that will be available, how and where the measurements are made and suggestions for how the data might be used to support space weather activities. Videos: In addition to posters, we are inviting videos of models and new data streams or techniques to view data and model output that are relevant to space weather activities. We will have one or two monitors and VCR*s available in the poster area for presenting videos. We anticipate videos such as recent ones produced from SOHO and Yohkoh. The videos will be shown, one following the other, and the sequence repeated depending on the time available and the number and length of the videos. When you register, please indicate if you will be bringing a video. (Posters and videos are separate presentations. We do not have the facilites to provide poster presenters with individual monitors and VCR*s.) Press: We plan on inviting local press, especially for the poster and video presentations. Thursday 2:45 Model Transition to Operations This session will address current efforts to transition research models to operational products, and provide the opportunity to discuss what is needed for future transition activities from the perspective of both the modelers and the end users. Friday 8:30 Panel Discussion: A brief review of the poster highlights will be presented by the panel members. The reviewers will be asked to identify the research products that are available: (1) now, (2) near-term, and (3) far-term. The discussion will then be directed toward identifying the areas where research can best support user needs. Questions will be posed to the panel members to focus the discussion. These questions may include: 1) What current needs can be met by available or near-term data and models? 2) What level of accuracy and validation is required? 3) What level of support and what data are needed by researchers to make their models available? 4) What is the most efficient way to transition research advances to operations? 5) What applications are best addressed by physics based vs. empirical models? +-------------------------------------------------------------------------+ |To add name to the mailing list, send a message to: editor at igpp.ucla.edu | |For message to whole GEM mailing list, send to: gem at igpp.ucla.edu | | | |URL of GEM Home Page: http://igpp.ucla.edu/gem/Welcome.html | |Please update your e-mail address. | |CAUTION: Do not send messages to gem at igpp.ucla.edu unless you want | | your message to go to everyone in the GEM mailing list! | +-------------------------------------------------------------------------+
