*************************** ** THE GEM MESSENGER ** *************************** Volume 7, Number 1 January 7, 1997 ----------------------------------------------------------------------- JOB ANNOUNCEMENT - RESEARCH POSITION IN SPACE PLASMA SIMULATION AT UCLA ----------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Philip Pritchett (pritchett at physics.ucla.edu) A postdoctoral research position in space plasma simulation will be available in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of California, Los Angeles beginning June 1, 1997 or shortly thereafter. This position will involve participating in the development of a large- scale, multi-fluid model of the coupled magnetosphere-ionosphere system with the overall objective of determining the physical basis of the coupling between the thin equatorward auroral arcs and the thin current sheet which forms within the near-Earth plasma sheet and thus to establish the precise mechanisms responsible for substorm breakup. Applicants must possess (or be about to obtain) a Ph.D. in plasma physics, space physics, or astrophysics and have a demonstated record of publications in refereed journals in which plasma simulation methods were extensively employed. Previous experience with MHD, multi-fluid, or hybrid models is particularly important. The nominal appointment for a postdoctoral position is for two years with the second year contingent on the expected continuation of a research grant. The nominal starting salary is $44,000 per year but may be adjusted depending on prior experience. Applications, including a professional resume, list of publications and presentations, and the names of three potential references, should be directed to either Philip Pritchett (310/825-3637, pritchett at physics.ucla.edu) or Ferdinand Coroniti (310/825-3440, chairman at physics.ucla.edu), both at Department of Physics and Astronomy, University of California, 405 Hilgard Avenue, Los Angeles, CA 90095-1547, USA. UCLA is an affirmative action/ equal opportunity employer. +-------------------------------------------------------------------------+ |To add name to the mailing list, send a message to: editor at igpp.ucla.edu | |For message to whole GEM mailing list, send to: gem at igpp.ucla.edu | | | |URL of GEM Home Page: http://igpp.ucla.edu/gem/Welcome.html | |Please update your e-mail address. | |CAUTION: Do not send messages to gem at igpp.ucla.edu unless you want | | your message to go to everyone in the GEM mailing list! | +-------------------------------------------------------------------------+
