GEM'97 Summer Workshop Announcement
-----------------------------------
From spence at bu.edu Fri Mar 14 12:40:40 1997

Dear GEM Community and other interested parties,

I am happy to announce that the summer '97 GEM Workshop is taking form
nicely. Below, you will find an initial description of the workshop format
for your planning purposes. As details develop I will forward them to you
by regular mail and/or post them electronically. This will include
registration, housing, and student/scientist support information.

Our meeting will be held again at the Silvertree Hotel in Snowmass,
Colorado on June 16 - June 20, 1997. We plan again to have an icebreaker
reception on Sunday evening, June 15, 1997. We also plan to have a
banquet, as in the past, on the Wednesday evening, June 18, 1997.

This year's coordination was trickier than ever owing to the many number
of ongoing campaigns, a tangible symbol of the success and health of the
GEM program. You will see in the skeleton program description, that this
summer's meeting will witness: (1) a winding down and new direction to the
first GEM campaign, the Boundary Layer (BL) Campaign; (2) a principal focus
on the second and now fully mature Magnetotail and Substorm (TS) Campaign;
(3) the coming of age of the third GEM campaign, the Inner Magnetosphere
and Storm (IM) Campaign; and (4) the synthesizing influence of the
overarching GGCM effort.

The gross workshop structure is presently planned according to the
following table. Times are representative and activities are identified
only crudely by which campaign(s) is/are active at various times throughout
the week. You will see that Monday and Thursday evenings are again
reserved for GEM poster presentations.

The great inrush of new data in the ISTP era and the development of the
GEM modeling efforts promises exciting opportunities at this summer's
workshop. I look forward to a productive meeting and hope to see you all in
Snowmass!

   Best regards,
