Job Announcement - Postdoctoral Research Associates Position at The
University of Newcastle
-------------------------------------------------------------------
From: phbjf at cc.newcastle.edu.au (Prof Brian Fraser)

University of Newcastle, NSW, Australia
Department of Physics
Space Plasma Waves Group(SPWG)

The Group has one Postdoctoral Research Associate positions immediately
available.

This position is a re-advertisement of the position posted late last year.
An offer was made and the position filled but after some time due to
unforeseen circumstances was not finally taken up.

Magnetosphere-Ionosphere Interaction Studies at High Latitudes

The SPWG in collaboration with the University of Maryland and the Australian
Antarctic Division, in February 1997 commissioned a new imaging riometer at
the Australian Davis station in Antarctica. The instrument is operational
and producing continuous data.

In addition, the SPWG operates magnetometers at the four Australian
Antarctic stations Davis, Casey, Mawson and Macquarie Island, and the New
Zealand Scott Base (McMurdo). The Australian stations also operate other
instrumentation, including magnetometers, standard riometers and all-sky low
low-light level optical imagers.

With this multi-instrumented network of stations covering 65 - 80 degrees
geomagnetic latitude, the SPWG is engaged in studies involving ultra-low
frequency (ULF) hydromagnetic waves and electromagnetic ion cyclotron waves
in the 1 mHz - 5 Hz frequency band in relation to dayside cusp and
night-time auroral phenomena. Equally important are studies on the dynamics
of magnetosphere-ionosphere coupling and dayside cusp studies.

The SPWG supports strong international collaborative studies and is
involved in the GEM, STEP and other programs.

We seek a recent Ph.D. graduate with a background in the area of
ionosphere and/or magnetosphere research. Familiarity with the types of
instruments and techniques employed, and an ability to program in C, Fortran
and/or IDL would be a distinct advantage, but is not necessary. The
appointee will be expected to work in Antarctica, over summer if required.

Further information on our high latitude and Antarctic research can be
located on the World Wide Web at the sites indicated below. Additional
information can be provided by email.

The appointment will be for a period of two years with the possibility of
extension of a further three years, subject to the availability of funds.

Further details of the Group's activities may be found on:
	Web Site: http://www.newcastle.edu.au/department/ph/plasma/
with links to the Australian Antarctic Division home page.

Interested applicants for this position WHICH IS IMMEDIATELY AVAILABLE
should forward a curriculum vitae, a statement of research interests,
and the names and email addresses of two referees willing to provide a
reference to:
