*************************** ** THE GEM MESSENGER ** *************************** Volume 7, Number 22 June 18, 1997 ------------------------------------ Plans for next ISTP Science Workshop ------------------------------------ From PEREDO at istp1.gsfc.nasa.gov Wed Jun 18 12:24:16 1997 To: ISTP and Space Science Communities From: ISTP Project RE: Plans for next ISTP Science Workshop Following the successful ISTP workshops of January and April 1997, the ISTP project is planning another science workshop on November 4-6, 1997. As with the earlier workshops, the format will allow for extensive data/modeling discussions, as well as interactive access to the world wide web for presentation of initial results at the plenary sessions and the smaller splinter sessions. Below you will find a preliminary list of themes for the splinter sessions; comments and/or suggestions for additional or revised topics are welcome. In the spirit of ISTP, we are particularly interested in sessions that address study of the Sun-Earth system in a global sense, and sessions that involve collaborative analysis of data from multiple missions. PRELIMINARY LIST OF TOPICS FOR ISTP WORKSHOP, NOV 4-6, 1997 1. Comparative study of Sun-Earth connection events. A number of space weather events have been thoroughly covered by the ISTP Observatory, and the resulting datasets allow quantitative evaluation of similarities and differences and their significance in disturbing geospace. 2. Comparative studies of reconnection. The ISTP measurements and simulations allow quantitative comparisons of reconnection at the Sun, the subsolar magnetopause, the high-latitude cusp, and the magnetotail. 3. Quantitative comparison of the roles played by the ionosphere, low latitude boundary layer and high latitude boundary layer in populating the plasma sheet.
