*************************** ** THE GEM MESSENGER ** *************************** Volume 8, Number 2 January 27, 1998 ------------------------------------------------------------- Report of the December 7, 1997 GEM Steering Committee Meeting ------------------------------------------------------------- From: Dick Wolf (wolf at alfven.rice.edu) MEETING OF GEM STEERING COMMITTEE (7:00-9:30 pm, December 7, 1997) Attending:, Kile Baker, Bob Clauer, John Freeman, Ray Greenwald, Michael Hesse, Mary Hudson, Jeff Hughes, Larry Lyons, Rumi Nakamura, Jimmy Raeder, Alan Rodger, Chris Russell, Howard Singer, George Siscoe, Roger Smith, Dick Wolf (chair). Jeff Hughes reported that the new Magnetosphere-Ionosphere Working Group had had a profitable afternoon meeting, with 22 people in attendance. Michael Hesse summarized the resuls of the afternoon planning session of the GGCM Campaign. Bob Clauer gave a quick report from NSF. He said that he has asked Chris Russell to oversee writing of the report on the first 5 years of GEM. FIVE-YEAR REPORT Chris led a discussion of the structure of the 5-year report, and some responsibilities were assigned. Major elements should be reports on the status of the following campaigns: * Boundary Layer Campaign (C. Russell, L. Lyons, N. Crooker, E. Friis-Christensen were named as likely contributors) * Tail/Substorm Campaign (M. Hesse, H. Spence, N. Maynard, L. Lyons, B. Lotko, T. Onsager were named as likely contributors) * Inner-Magnetosphere/Storm Campaign (M. Hudson will coordinate) * GGCM (G. Siscoe will coordinate) Chris will choose a single person to coordinate contributions for the Boundary Layer Campaign and another for the Tail/Substorm Campaign. It was agreed that the following themes should be emphasized related to the impact of GEM: Interdisciplinary International Interagency benefits Leverage/Focal-Point/Catalyst We should re-articulate the fundamental strategy of GEM and gauge its success. Some additional parts of the report: * Bibliography should include papers inspired and influenced by GEM, not just financially supported by the program. It should be categorized by area. * Description of logistics of program. * History of GEM, from Seattle to present (G. Siscoe will first-draft). This should include such items as the development of the winter SEC workshop and the development of the notion of space weather. * Development of ground-based systems (J. Hughes) * Model development, including the boundary-layer group's "Grand Challenge". * Educational component, including student tutorials. It was agreed that the report must be well illustrated. SUMMER WORKSHOP PLANNING John Freeman reviewed the basic arrangements for the next GEM Workshop, which will be held in Snowmass Village. The main sessions will be June 15-19, 1998. Student tutorials will be Sunday June 14, and the GEM S/C meeting will be Saturday June 20. The CEDAR Workshop will be the previous week. A contract has been signed with Snowmass Village for the 1999 workshop, the main sessions of which will be held June 21-25, 1999. John encouraged people to contact him if they would like the Workshop to be moved from Snowmass starting in 2000. Overall scheduling for 1998 Workshop: * Inner-Magnetosphere/Storm Campaign sessions will be Monday-Wednesday. * GGCM Campaign sessions will be Tuesday-Thursday. * Tail-Substorm Campaign sessions will be Wednesday-Friday. * The Magnetosphere-Ionosphere Working Group will have one 2-hour session each of three days: Monday, Tuesday, and Friday. Plenary tutorials: Two by Inner-Mag/Storms on Monday. One by Ionosphere-Magnetosphere on Tuesday One on GGCM on Wednesday. One agency tutorial on Wednesday. One on tail/substorm on Friday. Each tutorial should be 40 min + 10 min discussion.
