*************************** ** THE GEM MESSENGER ** *************************** Volume 8, Number 28 July 9, 1998 ---------------------------------------------------- Input Requested for GEM Inner Magnetosphere Campaign ---------------------------------------------------- From: Geoff Reeves At the June workshop in Snowmass participants in the GEM Inner Magnetosphere Campaign decided to begin data analysis, modelling, and comparison of outputs by picking two initial geomagnetic storms. We request input from the community as to which two storms to pick. We would like to have one storm that was driven by high-speed solar wind conditions and one storm that was driven by a magnetic cloud. The criteria for the storms should be ------------------------------------- 1) The storms should have good solar wind data and the solar wind conditions should be as simple, "classic", or "cartoon-like" as possible 2) The storms should have significant ring current and relativistic electron responses 3) The storms should have good satellite and ground-based data coverage 4) The storm responses should also be relatively "simple" and "isolated" It is anticipated that we will add one or two storms per year and that future storms will be chosen for their interesting, unusual, or even unique features. Please send suggestions to Geoff Reeves, reeves at lanl.gov, Mail Stop D-436, Los Alamos, NM 87545. Suggestions for storms shoud include a description of why this particular storm is suitable and matches the criteria above. Providing a plot of solar wind conditions (postscript, pdf, or bitmapped formats) would also be extremely helpful. Suggestions will be reviewed, compiled, and distributed in this newsletter. We anticipate a short meeting at the Fall AGU to make a final selection. Thanks in advance for your input Geoff Reeves, Janet Kozyra, Richard Thorne, Jim Horwitz, & Mary Hudson +-------------------------------------------------------------------------+ |To add name to the mailing list or for a message to the GEM community | | please contact: editor at igpp.ucla.edu | | | |URL of GEM Home Page: http://www-ssc.igpp.ucla.edu/gem/Welcome.html | |Please update your e-mail address. | +-------------------------------------------------------------------------+
