*************************** ** THE GEM MESSENGER ** *************************** Volume 9, Number 10 April 12, 1999 ---------------------------------------- CONCLUSION OF THE GEM SUBSTORM CHALLENGE ---------------------------------------- From: Jimmy Raeder (jraeder at igpp.ucla.edu) The GEM Substorm Challenge has been under way for more than a year now. Data for this event (November 24, 1996, approximately 2230 UT) have been collected and made publicly available. Several groups have run their models and compared their results with the data. As with the first GEM challenge (the January 27/28, 1992 convection intervals) exciting new results can be expected from these modeling efforts. At this year's GEM snowmass workshop we would like to bring this substorm challenge to a conclusion. All modelers are welcome to present their results at this final session. Of course, those who prefer to draw their conclusions directly from data are also encouraged to present their findings. It would help the organizers of this session enormously if those wishing to make presentations would indicate their intentions as soon as possible. This has also been proven effective in the past to avoid harassing phone calls. Besides discussing the detailed results we would also like to discuss at this meeting how the results should be published, and if there should be a follow-on to this challenge. As always, everybodys participation, comments, and criticisms are welcome.
