*************************** ** THE GEM MESSENGER ** *************************** Volume 9, Number 16 May 26, 1999 -------------------------------------------------------------------- Magnetosphere-Ionosphere Working Group Sessions at 1999 GEM Workshop -------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Jeff Hughes The Magnetosphere-Ionosphere Working Group (M-IWG) is organising three splinter sessions at this year's GEM workshop, one in conjunction with the inner magnetosphere/storms campaign, one in conjunction with the GGCM campaign, and one on its own. Below are descriptions of the three sessions and invitations to participate. M-I related posters will be presented on Tuesday evening. Session on "Nature of the Global Ionospheric Response to Changes in the IMF" (provisionally Tuesday, June 22, 3:45 pm; organizers: Ray Greenwald and Jeff Hughes) The Magnetosphere-Ionosphere Coupling Working Group has identified the "Nature of the global ionospheric response to changes in the IMF" as a critical topic. Last year, we had several presentations describing the manner in which convection in the dayside ionosphere appears to respond to changes in the IMF. In the past few months, there was a sharp exchange of viewpoints in JGR between a "Comment " submitted by Lockwood et al. and a "Reply" submitted by Ridley et al. This issue is of fundamental importance to the nature and extent of dayside reconnection. Therefore, we would like to use this workshop to consider this topic in greater detail. One focus of the discussion will be the reality and significance of a rapid, global ionospheric convection response to changes in the IMF. Another will be the impact on the global magnetosphere of a rapid global ionospheric response. Thirdly, we would like to consider what a large-scale response might imply about the nature of dayside reconnection and the magnetic field configuration in the magnetosheath. Interested persons are asked to address these and related questions in both their experimental and theoretical aspects. Please contact Jeff Hughes or Ray Greenwald at HUGHES at buasta.bu.edu or ray.greenwald at jhuapl.edu . Session on "M-I Coupling During Magnetic Storms" (provisionally Monday, June 21, 3:45 pm; organizers: Janet Kozyra and Jeff Hughes) This session will focus on M-I coupling issues, particularly during the three storm intervals selected by the joint CEDAR-GEM-SHINE Magnetic Storms Campaign (15-18 May, 1997; 24 Sept-1 Oct 1998; 18-31 Oct 1998; see GEM Messenger Vol.18, No.14 for details). We will address the upflow of ionospheric ions, precipitation, and electromagnetic coupling. Persons interested in contributing to these or related questions in both their experimental and theoretical aspects should contact Janet Kozyra or Jeff Hughes at jukozyra at srvr5.engin.umich.edu or hughes at buasta.bu.edu Session on "M-I Coupling in the GGCM" (provisionally Wednesday, June 23, 3:45 pm; organizers: Dick Wolf and Jeff Hughes) This session will focus on M-I coupling within global models, in particular how M-I coupling is addressed within present models and how M-I coupling algorithms need and should be improved in the future. We will address ionospheric conductivity models as well as whether we can improve on the Knight formalism for parameterizing the physics on auroral field lines. Persons interested in contributing to these or related questions should contact Dick Wolf or Jeff Hughes at wolf at alfven.rice.edu or hughes at buasta.bu.edu +-------------------------------------------------------------------------+ |To add name to the mailing list or for a message to the GEM community | | please contact: editor at igpp.ucla.edu | | | |URL of GEM Home Page: http://www-ssc.igpp.ucla.edu/gem/Welcome.html | |Please update your e-mail address. | +-------------------------------------------------------------------------+
