*************************** ** THE GEM MESSENGER ** *************************** Volume 9, Number 30 August 12, 1999 ------------------------------------------- AGU Fellows Nominations Due October 1, 1999 ------------------------------------------- From: R. W. Schunk (schunk at cc.usu.edu) The time has come again to select scientists you think should join the ranks of AGU Fellows. This honor is bestowed on only 0.1% of the membership in a given year, and therefore, the nomination packages should be both strong and complete. The instructions for nominating a colleague are given on the AGU web page at www.agu.org/inside/fellnom.html, and these instructions are reproduced in what follows: The deadline for nominations for 2000 Fellows is October 1, 1999. Instructions for nominating a colleague are: * a two-page letter of nomination which clearly details the nominee's most significant contributions, why they merit election as a Fellow and the name of the section to which the nomination should be directed, * a one-sentence citation, * a two-page current curriculum vita, * a two-page selected bibliography which also states the total number of the nominee's reviewed publications, and * at least 3 and no more than 6 letters supporting the nomination (at least two individuals are not to be currently or recently associated with the nominee's institution of graduate education or employment). Only complete nomination packages will be forwarded to the Section Fellows Committee. Packages that, on the deadline, do not meet the requirements for completeness, as outlined above, cannot be considered. Additionally, section presidents and presidents-elect cannot be considered for Fellowship during their tenure of office. Packages are to be submitted to: Chair, Committee of Fellows c/o American Geophysical Union 2000 Florida Avenue, NW Washington, DC 20009 Some important tips for preparing the nomination package are: (1) Make sure the nomination letter can be understood by scientists not in your field; (2) The supporting letters should have strong statements about both the scientist being nominated and his/her work; and (3) The supporting letters should be about two pages in length. If you have any questions, or if you require further information, please contact either the AGU or R. W. Schunk (Telephone: (435)797-2978; FAX: (435)797-2992; e-mail: schunk at cc.usu.edu). +-------------------------------------------------------------------------+ |To add name to the mailing list or for a message to the GEM community | | please contact: editor at igpp.ucla.edu | | | |URL of GEM Home Page: http://www-ssc.igpp.ucla.edu/gem/Welcome.html | |Please update your e-mail address. | +-------------------------------------------------------------------------+
