*************************** ** THE GEM MESSENGER ** *************************** Volume 9, Number 31 August 19, 1999 ------------------------------------------ GEM Proposals Target Date October 15, 1999 ------------------------------------------ From Dick Wolf (wolf at alfven.rice.edu) The GEM Steering Committee encourages submission of proposals this Fall for all active GEM campaigns (Tail/Substorm, GGCM, Inner-Magnetosphere/Storms). The target date for GEM proposals is October 15, 1999. NSF expects approximately $500,000 to be available for new proposals to the GEM program. Award sizes are expected to be in the range from $40,000 to $100,000, and NSF expects to make from 6 to 10 new awards. Proposals in the following areas are particularly encouraged: 1. Projects relevant to the Inner Magnetosphere and Storms Campaign, which is in full swing. Documents describing campaign goals and strategies are posted on the GEM web page (http://www-ssc.igpp.ucla.edu/gem/). 2. Modeling groups have placed many simulation results from Phase 1 of GGCM on the web for public use, both for chosen events and for standard solar-wind conditions that were defined by the GGCM Steering Committee. Some details of about GGCM Phase 1 were described in the GEM MESSENGER, volume 8, number 3, which is available at ftp://igpp.ucla.edu/scratch/gem/Messenger1998/Vol.08_No.03. The utilization of these Phase 1 products for research or for development of educational products (e.g. a tour of the magnetosphere) is encouraged. In addition, projects to produce new Phase 1 products are encouraged. NOTE: At this time, we do not encourage new proposals to extend the GGCM to Phase 2, which will allow simulations to be done at the request of a user. We expect the upcoming NSF announcement for the Space Weather Competition to contain language that will be relevant to the goals of GGCM Phase 2, and PI's with an interest in pursuing GGCM Phase 2 goals should wait and respond to the Space Weather announcement.
