*************************** ** THE GEM MESSENGER ** *************************** Volume 11, Number 6 May 9, 2001 ------------------------------------ NAS Decadel Survey: Data Exploration ------------------------------------ From: "Sibeck, Dave" The National Academy of Science has commissioned a Decadel Survey of Solar and Space Plasma Physics to report on the current status of the field and recommend implementation strategies to guide its future development. Data management, distribution, and utilization will form an important part of the survey's report. This section of the report will highlight outstanding accomplishments of the past decade, describe the existing situation, prioritize the tasks to be accomplished in the next decade, identify the technology required to achieve these goals, and make recommendations concerning their proposed implementation. It is important to emphasize that the report must cover the full range of activities supported by NASA, NSF, DoD, NOAA, DOE, and private industry. We welcome suggestions for topics to be included included in this part of the study and assistence in preparing it. Potential topics include (but are by no means limited to) success stories and recommended improvements concerning the provision of data from a single instrument, services integrating data sets from multiple instruments or spacecraft, documentation, visualization and tool development, data base management, data assimilation, data analysis (e.g. tomography), and public outreach. Identification of areas in need of improvement are equally welcome. Please contact panel members David Sibeck (david.sibeck at Jhuapl.edu) or Richard Bogart (rbogart at solar.stanford.edu) for further information or to volunteer. Suggestions will be most valuable if they arrive by June 2, and potential contributions will be most valuable if they arrive before June 14.
