*************************** ** THE GEM MESSENGER ** *************************** Volume 11, Number 10 May 11, 2001 ----------------------------------------------------- 2001 GEM Snowmass meeting - Joint GGCM / TS session on the ballooning instability ----------------------------------------------------- From: Jimmy Raeder Jim Drake A joint GGCM - Tail/Substorm session focusing on the ballooning instability and its consequences for the magnetotail will be held at this year's GEM Snowmass meeting on Thursday, June 21. We would like to discuss how likely the ballooning mode is to become unstable in the tail, what the consequences are, and how observational, theoretical, and modeling progress can be made. We invite everyone who is interested in this topic to participate. Short presentations are encouraged; if you want a definite spot, please contact one of the organizers. Jim Drake Jimmy Raeder ------------------------------------------------ 2001 GEM Snowmass meeting - GGCM phase-2 session ------------------------------------------------ From: Jimmy Raeder Joachim Birn The GGCM development plan envisions three phases in the development of Geospace General Circulation Models. The second phase, which calls for the offering of model runs on demand, is now coming to fruition at the Community Coordinated Modeling Center (CCMC/GSFC) and soon at UCLA. In this session, tentatively scheduled for Tuesday, June 19, 1:30 pm, we want to discuss primarily issues that arise with phase-2, as well as those that bear on the transition to phase-3 (fully accessible community models): * Which products and offering are most useful for the community? * Which post-processing and visualization tools are needed and if they should be prioritized? * Is it possible to standardize output formats so that the same visualization and post-processing tools can be used for different models? If so, how can this be accomplished? * Can interfaces between different sub-models be standardized? How would the standardization process work, i.e., how would standards be determined? Please note that this session targets not only the modelers but also prospective users of GGCMs. Because the GGCM phase-2 efforts are just starting, this is the time and place to help define the direction that phase-2 will take. Short presentations are encouraged. Anyone wishing to have a definite spot please contact one of the organizers. +-------------------------------------------------------------------------+ |To add name to the mailing list or for a message to the GEM community | | please contact: editor at igpp.ucla.edu | | | |URL of GEM Home Page: http://www-ssc.igpp.ucla.edu/gem/Welcome.html | |Please update your e-mail address. | +-------------------------------------------------------------------------+
