*************************** ** THE GEM MESSENGER ** *************************** Volume 12, Number 15 May 23, 2002 ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Special Session at GEM Focusing on Determining Metrics for Magnetospheric Simulations ------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Aaron Ridley GEM Community, We invite you to participate in a special session at GEM focusing on determining metrics for magnetospheric simulations. At this time, the metric for magnetospheric/ionospheric models is the root mean squared error between simulated ionospheric convection and that measured by the DMSP satellites. While this is a good metric in some regards, we would like to open discussion on using other, or additional, metrics to quantify the strengths, limitations, and improvements in magnetospheric models. We would also like to discuss the idea of having regularly scheduled "metrics challenges," while would serve to provide the community with a running quantification of improvments in code development. Please contact Aaron Ridley (ridley at umich.edu) or Michael Wiltberger (wiltbemj at tinman.dartmouth.edu) if you are interested in presenting your ideas on what a makes a good magnetospheric metrics. Please come and join us on Wednesday from 3:30-5:30 for what we are sure will be a lively discussion.
