Reminder - Proposals for the 2002 GEM Competition are due Oct. 15

The deadline for proposals submitted in response to the NSF Program
Solicitation for the Geospace Environment Modeling Program (NSF 02-122) is
October 15, 2002.  The areas of emphasis for this competition are: 

(1) Magnetosphere-Ionosphere Coupling, 

(2) Inner Magnetosphere and Magnetic Storms, and 

(3) the Geospace General Circulation Model (GGCM) campaign.  

Proposals should have direct relevance to one or more of these three GEM
campaigns.  The Tail/Substorm campaign is being phased out and proposals
relevant to that topic should be submitted to the base program of the
Magnetospheric Physics Program.

GEM postdoc proposals should NOT be submitted at this time.  The deadline
for the next GEM postdoc competition will be May 1, 2003, with the awards
beginning in Nov. of 2003.

This is the first time that GEM proposals are actually being submitted in
response to an official NSF Program Solicitation and it is important that
the correct Program Solicitation ID, NSF 02-122, be identified on the
proposal cover sheet.  Also, please remember that the word 'GEM' should be
the first word in the proposal title.  The GEM Program Solicitation can be
downloaded from the NSF web site.  The URL is:

It is also very important to remind all proposers that there have been
significant changes in the NSF Grant Proposal Guide (GPG) and proposals that
are not compliant with the new requirements will be returned without review.
Please consult the new GPG before you submit your proposal.  You can
