*************************** ** THE GEM MESSENGER ** *************************** Volume 12, Number 37 October 18, 2002 ------------------------------------------------------------------ Call for MI Coupling Events to Discuss at the 2003 Summer Workshop ------------------------------------------------------------------ From: T E Moore At the Telluride Meeting we had a spirited discussion on how to formulate a "MI coupling Challenge." The discussions revealed different expectations in the outcome of such a challenge by modelers, observers, and theoreticians. In view of the different expectations, needs and scope of a MI coupling challenge we propose to use event studies to encourage the development of the tools needed to make further progress. At the FALL 2002 workshop we want to identify several intervals or events that can be characterized as completely as possible by both observers and modelers given the current state-of-the-science. Special attention should be devoted to the following processes: Energy transfer from the magnetosphere to the ionosphere in all its forms The state of the topside ionosphere, plasmasphere, and plasma sheet The outflow of ionospheric plasma in response to the inputs The system behavior modeled with/without the ionospheric mass transfer. We note that the best observations of mass outflow from FAST, Akebono, and Polar are available in 1997, and TIMED was launched in 2002. Please come to our discussion session on the Afternoon of December 5 at the GEM mini-workshop and show us why the event you propose is appropriate. The MI coupling campaign organizers will select several of these events for discussion at the 2003 summer workshop.
