*************************** ** THE GEM MESSENGER ** *************************** Volume 14, Number 8 March 8, 2004 -------------------------------------------------------------------- Call for Participants: MI Coupling Working Group 1 on Plasma Outflow -------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Bill Peterson and Robert Winglee GEM MI Coupling Working Group 1 on plasma outflow for the 2004 Summer GEM Workshop in Snowmass, Colorado June 23-25 Co-Chars: Robert Winglee, winglee@ess.washington.edu, and Bill Peterson, Bill.Peterson@lasp.colorado.edu GEM Meeting website: http://gem.rice.edu/~gem Working Group 1 will sponsor a Tutorial Talk by Prof. Robert Schunk, Utah State University, entitled: "The Extended Ionosphere" and 4 breakout workshop style sessions focused on the questions listed below. If you would like to participate in any of these sessions, please contact one of us. Session 1: How much plasma comes out of the ionosphere? (Bill Peterson Chair) This year we will focus on the escape of thermal plasmas (i.e. the polar wind) Session 2: Where does the plasma go? (Robert Winglee Chair) This year we want to address transport/energization processes from the ionopshere to the Magnetotail/lobe, Ring Current, and Plasmasphere. Session 3: What does the plasma do? (Robert Winglee Chair) We want to structure this as an open forum that addresses the following questions: 1) What role does ionospheric plasma play in substorm/reconnection dynamics? 2) What role does ionospheric plasma play in global dynamics? 3) Do heavy ions matter in the ring current or are they just along for the ride? Session 4: Can definitive predictions be made? (Bill Peterson Chair) We have identified that high quality, mass resolved, observations of escaping plasma are available from Akeobono, FAST, and Polar for the interval from 14:30 on 3/18/97 to 02:00 on 3/19/97. We will have a short (less than 5 viewfoil) overview of these observations and then move to an open forum discussion that addresses the following topics: - Are the best available mass resolved observations of ion outflow adequate for ground truthing ion outflow codes? - Is there any relevant information available from radars that can be used to ground truth ion outflow codes? - What can be learned about ion outflow from Geotail, Cluster, and eventually MMS? +-------------------------------------------------------------------------+ |To subscribe GEM Messengers, send an e-mail to | | with the following command in the body of your e-mail message: | | subscribe gem | |To remove yourself from the mailing list, the command is: | | unsubscribe gem | | | |To broadcast a message to the GEM community, please contact Peter Chi at | | | |Please use plain text as the format of your submission. | | | |URL of GEM Home Page: http://www-ssc.igpp.ucla.edu/gem/Welcome.html | |Workshop Information: http://gem.rice.edu/~gem | +-------------------------------------------------------------------------+
