*************************** ** THE GEM MESSENGER ** *************************** Volume 14, Number 18 May 15, 2004 ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Special Advances in Space Research (ASR) Issue on Carrington and Other Major Geomagnetic Storms ----------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Bob Clauer A session on the Carrington Event of 1859 is being held at the 2004 Spring meeting of the American Geophysical Union in Montreal. This meeting follows an excellent workshop held at the University of Michigan in October 2003. The organizers of both the workshop and the AGU sessions have received the endorsement of COSPAR to publish a special thematic issue on extreme space weather events in Advances in Space Research (ASR). The issue is tentatively titled: "The Great Historical Geomagnetic Storm of 1859: A Modern Look." The issue will be edited by Robert Clauer and George Siscoe. The Carrington storm is perhaps the largest space storm to occur since the advent of scientific societies and their journals late in the 17th century provided enough information to be able to rank their strengths. The papers appropriate for the proposed thematic issue will consider the Carrington storm among recent well investigated superstorms, estimating the critical parameters of the storm and the solar and solar wind drivers, the possible response of the magnetosphere, ring current and radiation belts and ionosphere/thermosphere. A goal is to document this special storm as thoroughly as possible through reviews and to benchmark the rapidly advancing state of space weather modeling. The editors for this issue extend an invitation to the scientific community to submit papers for this special issue. All papers will be subject to the normal (2-person) peer review of the journal. The deadline for manuscript submission is 30 September 2004. We hope to accomplish the review process by the end of the year with publication in 2005. All articles will be available electronically on Elsevier's ScienceDirect prior to printing of the actual issue (which will have the traditional volume and page numbers). Contributors to this issue and all COSPAR associates will have an opportunity to purchase a copy of this issue at greatly reduced prices (estimated to be about 45 Euro per copy). All articles will be typeset at no cost to the author; there is a nominal charge for printing color figures although there is no charge for color figures on the electronic version. Details can be obtained from either of the editors: Robert Clauer (rclauer@umich.edu), and George Siscoe (siscoe@bu.edu) or from the ASR Editor-in-Chief, Peggy Ann Shea (sssrc@msn.com). +-------------------------------------------------------------------------+ |To subscribe GEM Messengers, send an e-mail to | | with the following command in the body of your e-mail message: | | subscribe gem | |To remove yourself from the mailing list, the command is: | | unsubscribe gem | | | |To broadcast a message to the GEM community, please contact Peter Chi at | | | |Please use plain text as the format of your submission. | | | |URL of GEM Home Page: http://www-ssc.igpp.ucla.edu/gem/Welcome.html | |Workshop Information: http://gem.rice.edu/~gem | +-------------------------------------------------------------------------+
