*************************** ** THE GEM MESSENGER ** *************************** Volume 14, Number 34 June 30, 2004 ----------------------------------------------- ORBITALS Science Workshop - First Announcement ----------------------------------------------- From: Ian R. Mann The Outer Radiation Belt Injection, Transport, Acceleration and Loss Satellite (ORBITALS) is proposed as a Canadian small satellite mission in support of the International Living With a Star (ILWS) program (see www.orbitals.org). A two-day ORBITALS Science Workshop will be held at the Banff Centre (www.banffcentre.ca), Banff, AB, Canada on September 23rd and 24th, 2004, beginning with a drinks reception on the evening of Wednesday 22nd September 2004. Full details of the workshop are at www.orbitals.org. We encourage participation from any scientists in the Canadian and international space environment communities who wish to become involved with the ORBITALS mission. Banff is easily accessible from Calgary International Airport, which enjoys direct air connections to many national and international locations. The ORBITALS is currently undergoing Concept Study funded by the Canadian Space Agency. The ORBITALS mission goal to "understand the acceleration, morphology, and variability of energetic electrons and ions in the inner magnetosphere" is perfectly aligned with the highest priority geospace mission objective for LWS and ILWS, the recent report from the ILWS Magnetosphere Task Group recommending that inner magnetospheric missions including the ORBITALS be given high scientific priority within ILWS. Full details of the ORBITALS mission and science are available at the ORBITALS web page www.orbitals.org. Through the participation of internationally leading inner magnetospheric scientists the workshop will review the current state-of-the-art in radiation belt and inner magnetospheric science, shaping the science questions and the ORBITALS mission requirements necessary for closure. We also recognize the importance of the involvement of young scientists with the ORBITALS project, and will be providing a limited number of travel grants for PhD students and young post-doctoral researchers to encourage their attendance at the workshop. These will be allocated on a first-come-first-served basis, and eligible researchers are encouraged to apply as early as possible. THE DEADLINE FOR WORKSHOP REGISTRATION AND ACCOMMODATION BOOKINGS IS FRIDAY JULY 16, 2004. ABSTRACT DEADLINE IS FRIDAY AUGUST 20th, 2004. +-------------------------------------------------------------------------+ |To subscribe GEM Messengers, send an e-mail to | | with the following command in the body of your e-mail message: | | subscribe gem | |To remove yourself from the mailing list, the command is: | | unsubscribe gem | | | |To broadcast a message to the GEM community, please contact Peter Chi at | | | |Please use plain text as the format of your submission. | | | |URL of GEM Home Page: http://www-ssc.igpp.ucla.edu/gem/Welcome.html | |Workshop Information: http://gem.rice.edu/~gem | +-------------------------------------------------------------------------+
