*************************** ** THE GEM MESSENGER ** *************************** Volume 14, Number 35 July 14, 2004 ---------------------------------------------------------- ORBITALS Science Workshop - Second and Final Announcement ---------------------------------------------------------- From: Ian Mann This is the second announcement for the ORBITALS Science Workshop. The Outer Radiation Belt Injection, Transport, Acceleration and Loss Satellite (ORBITALS) is a proposed Canadian Small satellite mission in support of ILWS which is currently undergoing CSA funded Concept Study. The workshop will be held from 22-24th September 2004 at the Banff Centre, Banff, AB, Canada (see www.orbitals.org for full details). The Workshop will cover aspects of ORBITALS science in the coupled inner magnetosphere encompassing radiation belt, ring current, and plasmasphere dynamics and related wave-particle and plasmaphysical interactions during storms. Specificly the meeting will address the following topics: i) The ORBITALS Mission and its Relationship to International Programs. ii) Radiation Belt Morphology, and Acceleration and Loss Processes. iii) Inner Magnetospheric Electric Fields. iv) Thermal Plasma Dynamics in the Inner Magnetosphere (including plasmaspheric dynamics, refilling processes etc) v) Plasma Waves and Plasma Physics in the Inner Magnetosphere vi) Inner Magnetospheric Modelling. vii) Space Weather in the Inner Magnetosphere Solicited speakers for the meeting include: David Knudsen, Andrew Yau (U. Calgary) Danny Summers (M.U. of Newfoundland) George Sofko (U. Saskatchewan) William Liu (CSA) David Boteler (NRCan) John Evans (Telesat Canada) Bob Fedosejevs, Robert Rankin, Ian Mann (U. Alberta) Geoff Reeves (LANL) Dan Baker, Janet Green, Scot Elkington (LASP) Paul O'Brien, Joe Fennel, Jim Clemmons (Aerospace) John Wygant (U. Minnesota) Mary Hudson, Robyn Millan (Dartmouth) Dennis Gallagher (NASA/MSFC) Richard Thorne (ULCA) Aaron Ridley (U. Mich) Jerry Goldstein (SWRI) Anthony Chan (Rice) Marc Lessard (UNH) Sebastien Bourdarie (ONERA-CERT/DESP, France) Registration forms from www.orbitals.org should be faxed to the University of Alberta. Accommodation is booked separately, the link to the reduced rate ORBITALS specific Banff Centre accommodation secure web pages will be e-mailed to you upon receipt of your registration form. Please note that the deadline for registration and accommodation booking is FRIDAY 16th JULY 2004. The abstract deadline is Friday 20th August 2004. Dr. Ian R. Mann.
