*************************** ** THE GEM MESSENGER ** *************************** Volume 14, Number 49 November 29, 2004 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Call for Participation in a Special Session: The Newton Challenge of Forced Reconnection 12 December 2004, 12noon - 2pm GEM 2004 Mini-Workshop, San Francisco Marriott -------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Joachim Birn Motivated by a Workshop on Magnetic Reconnection Theory, held in August 2004 at the Isaac Newton Institute, Cambridge, England, several researchers have started working on a new reconnection challenge problem. The new challenge concerns particularly the triggering of fast reconnection in the transition from a thick to a thin current sheet, forced by finite inflow at the boundary. The setup uses the same Harris initial state as the GEM challenge but with somewhat different parameters. This session deals with first results from these simulation studies but other contributions concerning the physics of reconnection are also welcome. (For more information about the challenge problem, please contact Joachim Birn at jbirn@lanl.gov. ) +-------------------------------------------------------------------------+ |To subscribe GEM Messengers, send an e-mail to | | with the following command in the body of your e-mail message: | | subscribe gem | |To remove yourself from the mailing list, the command is: | | unsubscribe gem | | | |To broadcast a message to the GEM community, please contact Peter Chi at | | | |Please use plain text as the format of your submission. | | | |URL of GEM Home Page: http://www-ssc.igpp.ucla.edu/gem/Welcome.html | |Workshop Information: http://gem.rice.edu/~gem | +-------------------------------------------------------------------------+
