*************************** ** THE GEM MESSENGER ** *************************** Volume 14, Number 50 December 8, 2004 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Call for Participation in Inner Magnetosphere/Storms Assessment Challenge: Radiation Belts Discussion GEM 2004 Mini-Workshop, San Francisco Marriott, December 12, 1-6 p.m. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Reiner Friedel Richard Thorne Mike Liemohn There has been continued debate within the Inner Magnetospheric Storms Campaign WG-2 on the event selection for our Storms Assessment Challenge. While work has continued on a variety of events it is becoming crucial now to select the event(s) to be studied, in time for results becoming available at the Santa Fe GEM workshop. The purpose of this meeting will be to achieve this event selection. Participants are asked to come prepared to suggest and defend their proposed event. Here is a a non-exhaustive list of event times that have been discussed: April 22, 2001 October 21-23, 2001 September 4-9 2002 March 27-Ap 6, 2004 July 22-28, 2004 Original GEM storms May 15, 1997, September 25, 1998, or October 19, 1998 As a reminder: The idea of the challenge is not necessarily to "solve the problem" but to see how good we can model and understand one storm period, even though that will not be representative of ALL storms. A key ingredient in this has been identified as our lack of knowledge of the magnetic field - both for modeling work and for simple data work of putting multiple measurements into context. Thus, in our event selection the availability of magnetic field measurements (GOES, POLAR, CLUSTER) and pitch angle measurements (LANL GEO) is paramount. For the latter there is an unfortunate limitation of data availability. LANL GEO pitch angle data periods: 2002: day of year 196 - end of year 2003: day of year 008 - 266 +-------------------------------------------------------------------------+ |To subscribe GEM Messengers, send an e-mail to | | with the following command in the body of your e-mail message: | | subscribe gem | |To remove yourself from the mailing list, the command is: | | unsubscribe gem | | | |To broadcast a message to the GEM community, please contact Peter Chi at | | | |Please use plain text as the format of your submission. | | | |URL of GEM Home Page: http://www-ssc.igpp.ucla.edu/gem/Welcome.html | |Workshop Information: http://gem.rice.edu/~gem | +-------------------------------------------------------------------------+
