*************************** ** THE GEM MESSENGER ** *************************** Volume 15, Number 9 March 1, 2005 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Two Job Opportunities at Space Environment Center (SEC) -------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Howard Singer 1. Energetic Particle Physicist Physicist, ZP-1310-IV, ($76,123-$116,942)(Boulder, Colorado) The National Weather Service's Space Environment Center (SEC) of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has a space physics research position to study energetic particles in the magnetosphere and ionosphere. The primary duties of this position will be to conduct scientific research on causes and consequences of energetic particles in the magnetosphere and ionosphere and to serve as the SEC responsible scientist for the NOAA Polar orbiting Operational Environmental Satellite (POES) Space Environment Monitor (SEM) and National Polar orbiting Operational Environmental Satellite System NPOESS energetic particle sensors. Other duties will include the oversight and monitoring of sensor development and calibration, the verification and validation of the data and the generation of products from the data. The responsible scientist tasks will require the incumbent to assess needs of the SEC Forecast Center and SEC customers; translate these requirements into measurement requirements, evaluate potential instrument solutions, monitor the design and development of space weather sensors; and ensure that data are received and processed properly and that products generated are accurate and timely. The research tasks will require the application of the POES SEM data to specific scientific problems. Interested individuals can view the vacancy announcement at www.usajobs.opm.gov. Announcement Number: NWS-NCEP-2005-0030, closing date April 18, 2005. Department of Commerce is an Equal Opportunity Employer. U.S. citizenship required. 2. Ionospheric Physicist Physicist, ZP-1310-IV, ($76,123-$116,942)(Boulder, Colorado) The National Weather Service's Space Environment Center (SEC) of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has a space physics research position available in the area of space weather and ionospheric dynamics. This position is for a research physicist in the area of space weather and the causes and consequences of ionospheric variability. The incumbent will conduct and lead independent and collaborative research in the area of ionospheric dynamics, including solar irradiance effects, solar wind - magnetosphere - ionosphere coupling, and ionosphere - atmosphere coupling. This research will be directed toward areas where ionospheric variability impacts society. Duties include the following: conduct original research and publish and present results; assess needs of the SEC Forecast Center and SEC customers; lead the development of new models and operational products; exploit advances in research that have applicability for space weather operations; work towards the transitioning of new models and data from research into Space Weather Operations; monitor the design and development of space weather sensors; and ensure that ionospheric data are received and processed properly and that products generated from the ground-based and space-based sensors are accurate and timely. The incumbent will be required to work as part of a team and to be able to present ideas and results in both oral and written formats. Interested individuals can view the vacancy announcement at www.usajobs.opm.gov. Announcement Number: NWS-NCEP-2005-0028, closing date is April 18, 2005.
