*************************** ** THE GEM MESSENGER ** *************************** Volume 15, Number 19 May 22, 2005 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- GEM GI Campaign News -------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: David Sibeck GEM's GI Campaign focusses on identifying the plasma sources for the Earth's magnetotail, determining their transport paths, and understanding the dependence of the plasma sheet properties upon prevailing solar wind and magnetospheric conditions. Sessions at this years meeting of the GEM GI campaign in Santa Fe, New Mexico from June 29-July 1, 2005 (spaceibm.rice.edu/~gem/) will focus upon (1) the processes that precondition the solar wind plasma prior to its interaction with the magnetosphere (Chair: Nick Omidi, omidi@adelphia.net), the origin of energetic particles in the cusps (Chair: Karlheinz Trattner, trattner@star.spasci.com), magnetopause processes that permit plasma entry into the magnetotail (Chair: Jean Berchem, jberchem@igpp.ucla.edu), and the origins and transport of plasma in the Earth's plasma sheet (Chairs: Antonius Otto and Terry Onsager, ao@how.gi.alaska.edu, terry.onsager@noaa.gov). We welcome contributions on these and other topics within the framework of the campaign(http://spacibm.rice.edu/~gem/gem2005/GI_campaign.html). We will continue to study previously suggested events on 15 March 2002, 18 April 2002, 22-24 October 2003, and 24-25 October 2003 (see meeting notes at http://spacibm.rice.edu/~gem/gem2004ms/gem2004mws.html), and will publicize suggested topics and events if received in sufficient time before the meeting. This looks to being just as lively a session as those in the past, and we are looking forward to seeing you there. If you have a contribution, please contact the respective chairs, with a copy to the coordinators, so that we may organize the meeting.
