*************************** ** THE GEM MESSENGER ** *************************** Volume 16, Number 17 June 6, 2006 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Request for Community Input ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Bob Strangeway To all GEM 2006 Summer Workshop participants: The Inner Magnetosphere/Storms (IM/S) campaign will be terminating this year. The GEM Community therefore needs to identify a new campaign to take the place of the IM/S Campaign. Part of the Friday afternoon plenary session at this Summer's workshop has been set aside for discussion of possible new GEM campaigns. I am therefore soliciting ideas for a new campaign from the GEM participants. Please either send me a brief summary of a new campaign that I can present on your behalf, or if you prefer, a request to speak in the plenary session. I also welcome comments on the following ideas and discussion points for a new campaign. The last few campaigns have emphasized regions. Is it now time for a campaign that emphasizes either methodologies or physical processes? I would like to suggest the following campaign topics (1) Multipoint observations (methodology based). This is geared towards THEMIS-era science, but without necessarily concentrating on substorms. Working groups or topics could include: ground-based observatories - ground truth for space-based observations; Simulations as connective tissue for multi-spacecraft and ground observations (with GGCM liaison); Substorm science; Dayside multi-point (with GI liaison). (2) Microphysics and macrophysical impacts (process based). This campaign would be geared towards exploring physical processes to be ingested into GGCM-like models. This campaign would have a strong interaction with the GGCM Science Steering Committee. Working groups could be: the auroral acceleration region; inner magnetosphere wave-particle interactions; reconnection physics (with GI liaison). These are just ideas to get the discussion started. As noted above I welcome comments on these ideas, as well as other campaign suggestions. I also encourage as many GEM participants as possible to stay for the Friday afternoon plenary session. It is important that we get as much input from the community as possible.
