*************************** ** THE GEM MESSENGER ** *************************** Volume 16, Number 18 June 12, 2006 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- GEM 2006 Summer Meeting (June 25-30, 2006) Snowmass, CO Workshop on Reconnection at the Magnetopause (Second Announcement) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Jean Berchem Workshop on Reconnection at the Magnetopause (Second Announcement) Chairs: Jean Berchem and Nick Omidi During the 2006 GEM Summer Meeting, the GI Campaign will hold a workshop on magnetic reconnection at the magnetopause. This workshop will focus on two sets of issues: (1) Component vs. anti-parallel reconnection (2) Inherent and upstream induced time dependent reconnection. The extent to which component and/or anti-parallel reconnection occur at the magnetopause and the factors that control it remain unclear. Major questions to be addressed during the workshop will be kinetic aspects, results from global models and experimental tests of the models. The ultimate goal of the workshop is to further test the models and evaluate the particle entry at the magnetopause as a function of solar wind conditions. Similarly, observations of Flux Transfer Events (FTEs) have established the occurrence of time dependent reconnection at the magnetopause. However, the extent to which this time dependence is inherent or induced by upstream events and fluctuations in the magnetosheath remains to be established. The objective of this workshop is to assess the current understanding and state of knowledge on time dependent reconnection and the outstanding issues that can be addressed through coordinated efforts in the future. Observational and theoretical contributions to these sessions are hereby solicited. Questions related to the session on component vs. anti-parallel reconnection should be directed to Jean Berchem at jberchem@igpp.ucla.edu and those related to time dependent reconnection to Nick Omidi at omidi@solanasci.com.
