Solicitation of Contribution to the "Global Modeling of Magnetospheric
Magnetic Reconnection" session at the Mini-GEM meeting on Sunday, Dec.

We would like to invite contributions to this GEM mini-workshop session
on December 10 in the Marriott hotel.  The session will focus on global
modeling of magnetic reconnection in the magnetosphere.  Specifically,
we would like to address the following questions:

1.  Reconnection time scale problem -- is global resistive MHD up to the
task?  how does magnetic reconnection depend on the resistivity model in
global MHD simulations?  (e.g., does the reconnection rate drop rapidly
with decreasing resistivity?)

2.  System size problem -- how do local kinetic simulations which show
fast reconnection "scale up" to large systems?  (e.g., do large kinetic 
simulations produce macroscopic current sheets?)

3.  GGCM modules and methods -- evaluation of current approaches (e.g.,
global hybrid, fluid closure, embedding) to global modeling of 
collisionless reconnection.

One of the goals of the session will be to formulate challenge problems
to address these topics.

We hope to maintain the "workshop" mode and have a more or less open
discussion of these topics, but those who are interested in presenting a
couple of slides are welcome to attend.  However, please let the 
conveners know if you wish to present slides.
