*************************** ** THE GEM MESSENGER ** *************************** Volume 17, Number 2 January 31, 2007 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Call for GEM Participation in LWS CDAW Working Group Sessions 5-9 March 2007 - Florida Tech - Melbourne, FL http://cism.fit.edu/LWS-CDAW_2007_Main.html Deadline for Registration, Abstract Submission and Request for Financial Assistance: January 31, 2007 <== TODAY! ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Mary Hudson < Mary.K.Hudson at dartmouth.edu> and Mike Liemohn < liemohn at umich.edu> We hope to call to the attention of the GEM community the opportunity to participate in the upcoming LWS CDAW Conference jointly with our SHINE and CEDAR colleagues. This Conference is a gathering of the three communities, SHINE, GEM, and CEDAR (as WG 1, 2, and 3, respectively) in a GEM-style, loose and open discussion atmosphere to get the people from these various communities to talk to each other about our common interests. Those GEM people who are interested in exploring more of the system-level science processes, beyond their regular scope of research, are encouraged to attend and participate. WG2: Mechanisms of Geomagnetic Storms and Radiation Belt Response, is planning a joint meeting with WG3 (Ionospheric Storms) on Mon afternoon after the coffee break, to discuss plasmspheric plumes and ionospheric signatures; and a joint meeting with WG1 (Drivers of Geomagnetic Storms) on Tues morning after the coffee break, to discuss double-Dst storms and their solar wind signatures. Besides tutorial speakers listed in the general announcement below, focus topic speaker Sasah Ukhorskiy will kick off the Mon afternoon WG1 session with a radiation belt talk; Pontus Brandt and Jerry Goldstein will speak to the ring current and plasmasphere roles in the Cycle 23 storms on Thurs and Fri, in plenary. Abstracts received by 1/31/07 will be organized for the conference part of the meeting W-F. We expect to have more time available for working group discussion during the latter part of the week. Suggestions for focus topics for our WG2 sessions Mon PM, Tues AM and Tues PM are welcome, please e-mail mary.hudson@dartmouth.edu or liemohn@umich.edu. Final Call for Papers --------------------------------------------------------------------------- This is the final call for contributions on any topic related to geomagnetic storms of cycle 23. Papers on storms from other cycles are also invited, provided they compare them with the cycle 23 storms. Registration and abstract submission deadline: January 31, 2007. Go to http://cism.fit.edu/LWS-CDAW_2007_Registration.html. Students and young researchers in need of financial assistance to the meeting should contact Nat Gopalswamy (gopals AT ssedmail.gsfc.nasa DOT gov) by January 31. The list of 88 major geomagnetic storms (Dst < -100 nT) from 1996 to 2005 with links to all kinds of observations from the Sun to Earth can be found in the following location: http://cdaw.gsfc.nasa.gov/geomag_cdaw/Data_master_table.html The data sets will be used to address several key questions that can be broadly classified as Heliosphere and Sun-Earth Connectedness, Global Magnetosphere-Ionosphere Response, and Inner Magnetosphere and Ionosphere Response. The questions are listed in http://cism.fit.edu/LWS-CDAW_2007_Main.html#questions. Tutorial speakers: Mary Hudson, Tim Fuller-Rowell, Dimitris Vassiliadis, Janet Luhmann, David Sibeck, Geoff Reeves, Ramona Kessell and Lika Guhathakurta. Working group (WG) leaders WG1: Drivers of geomagnetic storms (CME and solar surface source region, CME/ICME relation): David Webb, Ian Richardson WG2: Mechanisms of geomagnetic storms and radiation belt response: Mary K. Hudson, Mike Liemohn WG3: Ionospheric Storms: Geoff Crowley, Joe Huba WG4: Prediction of Geomagnetic storms: Ramon Lopez, Robert L.
