*************************** ** THE GEM MESSENGER ** *************************** Volume 17, Number 7 May 2, 2007 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- GEM 2007 Summer Workshops: Workshop on "Physical Processes in the Cusps: Implications for Plasma Transport and Energization" ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Karlheinz Trattner and Nick Omidi The GEM 2007 Summer Workshop June 17-22, 2007, Zermatt, Utah Workshop on "Physical processes in the cusps: Implications for plasma transport and energization" During the 2007 GEM Summer Workshop the "Transport at the dayside magnetopause and cusp" (TADMAC) focus group will hold sessions on the physical processes in the cusps. These sessions will focus on the nature of the physical processes occurring in the outer and the inner cusp and their role in particle acceleration and transport. This includes interaction of FTEs with the cusp, origin of the waves observed in the cusp and their role in particle scattering and acceleration, the source region of energetic ions and electrons observed in the cusp and ionospheric signatures of these processes such as Poleward Moving Auroral Forms. It is the ultimate goal of the workshop to enhance our understanding of the cusp physics, its coupling to other parts of the system such as the bow shock, magnetopause and the ionosphere and the important role it plays in dayside transport and energization. Observational and theoretical contributions to this session are hereby solicited. Questions related to these sessions should be directed to Karlheinz Trattner (trattner@mail.spasci.com) and Nick Omidi (omidi@adelphia.net).
