*************************** ** THE GEM MESSENGER ** *************************** Volume 17, Number 8 May 4, 2007 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- GEM 2007 Summer Workshops: Workshop on "Magnetic Reconnection at the Magnetopause" ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Jean Berchem Nick Omidi Karlheinz Trattner The "Transport at the dayside magnetopause and cusp" (TADMAC) focus group will hold a session on the physical processes at the dayside magnetopause during the next GEM workshop (June 17-22, 2007, Zermatt, Utah). In particular, we will discuss outstanding issues on magnetic reconnection. During the last GEM GI session on the dayside magnetopause held during Fall AGU at San Francisco, we identified that determining spatial properties of reconnection at the magnetopause (e.g., large-scale shape of the merging region(s), extent of the merging lines, tearing island formation) could be one of the specific targets of the new TADMAC focus group. In addition, we selected two events that could be used to start our discussion: 3 JUN 1996 06:15-06:26 UT and 6 NOV 1997 15:06-15:14 UT. These events have been studied in detail by Trattner et al., 2007 (Probing the boundary between anti-parallel and component reconnection during southward IMF conditions by K.J. Trattner, J.S. Mulcock, S.M. Petrinec, S.A. Fuselier, JGR 2007 - in press). Observational and theoretical contributions to this session are hereby solicited for that session. Please send us a title of your contribution at you earliest convenience. Jean Berchem (jberchem@igpp.ucla.edu), Nick Omidi (omidi@adelphia.net) and Karlheinz Trattner (trattner@mail.spasci.com).
