Greetings, This past June, at the annual GEM Summer Workshop, we had a successful kick-off of the new focus group FG9 on Space Radiation Climatology. We are presently set up to build data-assimilative, physics-based models of the radiation belts and plasmas in the inner magnetosphere, to run those models for a complete solar cycle, and then to use the resulting "reanalysis climatology" to develop our physical understanding of the inner magnetosphere. It may be that we have bitten off more than we can chew, so there are ongoing discussions with the GEM Steering Committee as to what, if anything, needs to be done about our scope. One of the results of our discussions was the need to stay in touch between GEM functions. This is the first of what will likely be monthly email updates. For more detailed and more frequent updates, consult the ViRBO wiki at http://virbo.org/wiki/index.php/GEM2007. For those of you interested in receiving future email updates, please follow the instructions below to join our email list. In other news, NSF will only fund 6-7 new GEM proposals this year, so we will have to be creative to secure funds for our focus group. Thank you all. You will not receive any further FG9 Newsletters unless you subscribe to the email group. Special thanks to Bob Weigel for hosting our Wiki and setting up the email group.
