*************************** ** THE GEM MESSENGER ** *************************** Volume 17, Number 25 November 9, 2007 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Solicitation of Contributions to the "Near Earth Magnetosphere: Plasma, Fields and Coupling " Focus Group Session at the GEM 2007 Mini-workshop ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Sorin Zaharia , Stan Sazykin and Benoit Lavraud , Focus Group co-chairs We would like to invite contributions to the Near Earth Magnetosphere focus group session at the upcoming GEM Mini-workshop (from 2:00 to 3:45 PM on Sunday Dec. 9 at the Marriott Hotel in San Francisco). An outline of the major topics of interest for the focus group is accessible at: http://www.spaceplasma.unh.edu/~jraeder/GEM/uploads/Main/GEM_FGProp-2006- NearEarth.pdf While any study relevant to the focus group goals is welcome, following community input at the 2007 Summer Workshop we especially encourage studies that address the following topics, which could evolve into breakout session themes at the next workshop: 1. Studies of the relative effect of plasma sheet boundary input, electric/magnetic field self-consistency, anisotropy and losses in inner magnetosphere models; how well are the various new physics features added to the models verified by / improve consistency with observations? 2. Improving the empirical specification of the inner magnetosphere, including better: a). plasma sheet models (including activity binning and ion composition), b). empirical electric fields, and c). plasmaphere models. In order to encourage discussion, each speaker should be prepared to present no more than 2 or 3 slides.
