*************************** ** THE GEM MESSENGER ** *************************** Volume 17, Number 27 November 13, 2007 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- GEM Mini-workshop Session "Reconnection at the Dayside Magnetopause” ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: J. Berchem and N. Omidi, Conveners A mini-GEM session on reconnection at the magnetopause will be held at the San Francisco Marriott Hotel on Sunday December 9 (see http://spacsun.rice.edu/~gem/gem2007mw/index.html) This session will bring together people that are involved/interested in the investigation of magnetic reconnection at the dayside magnetopause. The main objectives of this session is to discuss the current status of the research, identify specific research topics, and initiate collaborative efforts that would enhance the scientific returns of the 2008 Summer GEM workshop to be held at the Zermatt Resort, Utah. Topics of discussion include: - properties of large-scale reconnection at the magnetopause (e.g., spatial extent and controlling factors) - modeling reconnection events (e.g., 3 JUN 1996 [06:15-06:26 UT] and 6 NOV 1997 [15:06-15:14 UT] events studied by Trattner et al. [JGR, 2007]) - dayside reconnection studies using Themis observations - impact of solar wind discontinuities (e.g., magnetosheath reconnection initiated through RD/TD interactions with the bow shock). Those who are interested in these topics are invited to attend this session and contribute through participation in the discussions and if necessary by showing a couple of relevant slides. Please send us your suggestions and notices of intent to participate at your earliest convenience to allow adequate planning for the session.
