*************************** ** THE GEM MESSENGER ** *************************** Volume 17, Number 30 November 30, 2007 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- A few Notes from the Chair ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Jimmy Raeder As the Fall AGU meeting is rapidly approaching I would like to keep the GEM community posted on recent developments: 1. The 2008 summer workshop will be held at the Zermatt resort in Midway/Utah from June 23-27, 2008. Student tutorials will be on the preceding Sunday, as usual. This workshop will be joint with SHINE. A committee has been set up to organize the joint activities, chaired by Joe Borovsky (jborovsky@lanl.gov). Please contact Joe for suggestions and ideas about the joint part of the workshop. 2. CEDAR will also meet at Zermatt, in the week preceding GEM/SHINE, Tuesday, June 17, through Saturday, June 21. CEDAR organizers will make an effort to back load all sessions with relevance to GEM. Please direct suggestions and ideas regarding CEDAR/GEM joint topics to Simon Shepherd (simon.g.shepherd@Dartmouth.EDU). 3. On the Sunday between CEDAR and GEM/SHINE there will be a workshop on "Community Models", which will be organized by a committee chaired by Terry Onsager. Please direct your suggestions and ideas about this workshop to Terry (Terry.Onsager@noaa.gov). 4. As usual, there will be "pre-AGU" half-day GEM workshop with breakout sessions at the San Francisco Mariott on Sunday, December 9, 2008. Details have been announced in Bob Clauer's GEM MESSENGER message (see: Volume 17, Number 29) and can also be found here: http://spacsun.rice.edu/~gem/gem2007mw/index.html 5. At the "pre-AGU" GEM workshop there will be one session (4:00 - 5:35pm) where the proposers of new Focus Groups have the opportunity to present their proposals and to answer questions. Five proposals have been received and they can be viewed at: http://www.spaceplasma.unh.edu/~jraeder/GEM/index.php?n=Main.FGProposals Comments and concerns about these proposals should be directed to the members of the GEM Steering Committee (see: http://www.spaceplasma.unh.edu/~jraeder/GEM/index.php?n=Main.Bylaws for a list). 6. The GEM Steering Committee will meet in the evening of December 9. The selection of new Focus Groups and the selection of the 2009 summer workshop location will be the main agenda items. Please let the SC members know if you have suggestions or concerns about the GEM program. +-------------------------------------------------------------------------+ |To subscribe GEM Messengers, send an e-mail to | | with the following command in the body of your e-mail message: | | subscribe gem | |To remove yourself from the mailing list, the command is: | | unsubscribe gem | | | |To broadcast a message to the GEM community, please contact Peter Chi at | | | |Please use plain text as the format of your submission. | | | |URL of GEM Home Page: http://www-ssc.igpp.ucla.edu/gem/Welcome.html | |Workshop Information: http://gem.rice.edu/~gem | +-------------------------------------------------------------------------+
