THEMIS Software Tutorial and Clinic GEM Meeting: Thu, Jun 26, Zermatt Utah ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Vassilis Angelopoulos We are pleased to announce that a THEMIS Software Tutorial and Software "Trouble Shooting" Clinic will be held at the GEM Conference in Zermatt Utah on Thursday June 2008 (http://www.cpe.vt.edu/gem/) Topics include: 1. The THEMIS Web Site (http://themis.ssl.berkeley.edu/) review: THEMIS Data/Plots on line, Software Downloads, Publications and Documentation available as well as use of the THEMIS Help System. 2. The THEMIS Data Analysis Software review: IDL Command Line and Graphical User Interface (GUI) tools; data availability, retrieval, calibration, coordinate transformations, data manipulation as well as plotting. IDL Cribs will be reviewed, providing examples of software utilization. 3. The THEMIS Software Clinic will focus on user support in installing and running the THEMIS Software as well as any other "trouble shooting" needs the attendees may have. THEMIS software and science team members will be available to support any issues with any of the platforms (PC, MAC, Linux, Unix) on which THEMIS performs. Note that the THEMIS software is IDL based. IDL6.3 or greater is needed to run it. The software, installation instructions, user's guide and previous tutotials are available at the above site. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2. Solicitation of Contributions to the 2008 Joint GEM-SHINE Session on "Multiple-Dip Geomagnetic Storms: Solar-Wind Drivers or Internal Magnetospheric Processes" ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Vania K. Jordanova We invite you to participate in the joint GEM-SHINE session on multiple-dip geomagnetic storms that will be held during the 2008 Summer Workshop in Zermatt, Utah, on Monday afternoon 1:30-5:00 pm. The main objective of this session is to use observations, theory, and modeling to assess the current status and establish collaborative efforts towards understanding the physical processes of geomagnetic storms. In particular, we will focus on the role of external drivers and internal mechanisms in particle transport, acceleration, and loss during multiple-dip storms. The primary topics for discussion are: 1. Solar sources of multiple-dip storms 2. Interplanetary drivers of multiple-dip storms 3. Role of the ionospheric source populations 4. Effects of preconditioning of the plasma sheet 5. Particle injection into the ring current, dayside outflows 6. Effects of ion composition in multiple-dip storms 7. Radiation belt dynamics, contribution of electrons 8. Plasmasphere response, role of drainage plumes 9. Coupling between these regions and feedback to the global system 10. Methods of forecasting multiple-dip storms We invite those interested in giving a short presentation, or with suggestions for other discussion topics, to contact the conveners Vania Jordanova (vania@lanl.gov) or Ian Richardson (ian.g.richardson@nasa.gov). +-------------------------------------------------------------------------+ |To subscribe GEM Messengers, send an e-mail to | | with the following command in the body of your e-mail message: | | subscribe gem | |To remove yourself from the mailing list, the command is: | | unsubscribe gem | | | |To broadcast a message to the GEM community, please contact Peter Chi at | | | |Please use plain text as the format of your submission. | | | |URL of GEM Home Page: http://www-ssc.igpp.ucla.edu/gem/Welcome.html | |Workshop Information: http://gem.rice.edu/~gem | +-------------------------------------------------------------------------+
