Focus Group Planning: "Geospace System", GEM Mini-Workshop, San Francisco ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Bill Lotko George Siscoe Simon Shepherd Bob Strangeway Please join us at the GEM Mini-Workshop in San Francisco for discussion and planning of a global, system-dynamics study of the coupled solar wind-magnetosphere-ionosphere-thermosphere system (geospace system). We welcome brief presentations, viewpoints and ideas on - System questions that expose the coupled complexity of the geospace system; - Related topical studies of the geospace system; and - Synergistic connections with existing and proposed GEM focus groups and related CEDAR studies. Email one of us if you would like to make a presentation. This 1.5-hour session is not a meeting of an approved focus group but a continuation of the discussion started at the 2009 Snowmass Workshop to explore and vet ideas for development of such a group. Additional information on the proposed focus group's motivation, objectives and provisional direction may be found at http://aten.igpp.ucla.edu/gemwiki/index.php/Geospace_System. Location: TBD Date: Sunday, December, 13 Time: 3:30-5:00 PM ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2. THEMIS Software Demo at GEM 2009 pre-AGU Mini-Workshop December 13, 2009, 3:30-5:30pm San Francisco, California ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Vassilis Angelopoulos , David King Bob Clauer A THEMIS software demo will be held in conjunction with the upcoming Geospace Environment Modeling Mini-Workshop on Sunday prior to AGU (December 13, 2009) between 3:30 and 5:30pm. The location (along with the complete schedule for the GEM workshop) will be available at: http://aten.igpp.ucla.edu/gemwiki soon. Check at that site for the location of the event as AGU comes closer. As in past meetings, the software demonstration will cover the acquisition and manipulation of data from the THEMIS satellite constellation and ground observatories. The data and software are available to all scientists. Previous tutorials can be found on line at: http://themis.ssl.berkeley.edu/ -> Software -> Documentation The software is IDL based and downloads the data for you. Familiarity with IDL is not needed to get started. This year's tutorial will include more on the Graphical User Interface and a mini-language for data manipulation within it. +-------------------------------------------------------------------------+ |To subscribe GEM Messengers, send an e-mail to | | with the following command in the body of your e-mail message: | | subscribe gem | |To remove yourself from the mailing list, the command is: | | unsubscribe gem | | | |To broadcast a message to the GEM community, please contact Peter Chi at | | | |Please use plain text as the format of your submission. | | | |URL of GEM Home Page: http://aten.igpp.ucla.edu/GemWiki | |Workshop Information: http://www.cpe.vt.edu/gem/index.html | +-------------------------------------------------------------------------+
